Sony ICF SW7600GR Good RCV????

Postby Robert Dunlap » Fri Nov 19, 2004 4:56 am

I am new to SWL and purchased a Sony ICF SW7600GR.....I tried the telescopic antenna with not to much luck....I also strung about 100ft wire anteena betwwen 2 trees and clipped it to my telescopic antenna.... I reaaly don't receive a lot of SW channels....???....... I was looking into maybe a Preselector or active antenna to improve the reception....maybe the Sony AN LP1 active loop antenna....what would be the best choice....I did some research on this radio which has AM detection an dual conversion--PLL synthesized, I'm really not impressed....or is there a better choice of radio in the $200 range. Any help would surely be appreciated............THANX

I bought the same unit(SW7600GR) 2 days back. I live in Lansing, MI.
FM and MW receptions are good. But SW reception is very poor. In the last two days I was able to just tune to 2 or 3 stations but again poor quality reception. I tried the retractable antenna provided with it, with not much improvement. I called Sony customer service to see whehter they could help me. All they said was the purchase was eligible for exchange. I am not sure whether an exchange would help.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Rob, the SW 7600 is probably the best portable SW receiver on the market today. I have one and love it, it's better than my Sangean 909 with the Super radio mods and cost less money. If your having trouble receiving here are a couple of things to try. First be sure to check the Local/DX switch and make sure it's set to DX. Next, go to Radio shack and buy a 1/8 inch mono plug with a 6 ft length of coax terminated in aligator clips. This comes in a package already assembled for a couple of bucks. Put up a dipole antenna and use plain old TV type twin lead to go from the antenna to your window. Clip the aligator clps on the twinlead and plug it into the antenna in jack on the side. The antenna doesn't have to be any specific length, the longer the better but 10 or 15 feet will work fine. If you still can't bring in stations then propagation is probably bad. The Sony is a very sensetive radio and if there are signals out there, it will hear them. Hope this was some help to you & let me know if you need any more help or advice.
